Bleu Garde Announces Landmark EPA Registration for Arresta® at Builds Bio+ Philadelphia Life Science Symposium

Bleu Garde, LLC, a science and technology company developing next-generation indoor air treatment technologies for pathogen reduction, environmental health and pandemic preparedness, today announced at the Builds Bio+ 5th Annual Philadelphia Life Science Symposium that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has registered Arresta® for use as a virucidal air treatment, air sanitizer and fungistat, including use in occupied indoor spaces in accordance with its EPA-approved label.

The announcement at Builds Bio+ brings the achievement before a community focused on advancing life sciences innovation and the infrastructure and environments that enable it. Builds Bio+ brings together leaders spanning science, biotechnology, healthcare, engineering, real estate, investment and the built environment to accelerate the growth of the life sciences ecosystem. Bleu Garde’s EPA registration represents an innovation at the intersection of several of those disciplines: microbiology, exposure science, engineering, environmental health and the design and operation of the indoor environments in which people live, work, learn and receive care.

“Some of the most important advances in life sciences occur when scientific discovery moves beyond the laboratory and begins addressing real-world challenges,” said Nancy J Kelley, JD, MPP, Founding Member of Builds Bio+ and President & CEO of Nancy J Kelley + Associates. “That is why this is such a meaningful announcement to make at the Builds Bio+ Philadelphia Symposium. Bleu Garde’s work brings together science, engineering, environmental health and the built environment in a way that reflects the interdisciplinary innovation our organization was created to advance.”

The EPA registration represents a major milestone in indoor air treatment. Arresta is a first-of-its-kind EPA-registered antimicrobial air treatment designed to continuously treat the air while people are present. Unlike episodic approaches that require a space to be vacated during treatment, Arresta brings active air treatment into the occupied environment, creating an additional tool for addressing airborne microorganisms where exposure can occur.

The registration follows more than six and a half years of scientific research, efficacy testing, exposure assessment, engineering development and extensive engagement with EPA as Bleu Garde worked through the regulatory and scientific questions associated with a new approach to reducing airborne pathogens in occupied environments.

“This is much more than a regulatory milestone for Bleu Garde. It represents the culmination of extraordinary collaboration, scientific rigor and persistence,” said Etienne Grignard, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bleu Garde. “Treating airborne pathogens continuously in occupied spaces raised scientific and regulatory questions that required an extensive body of evidence and close engagement throughout the regulatory process. We remained committed to the science and to establishing a pathway for an entirely new approach to airborne pathogen reduction.”

“And this achievement belongs in large measure to our science and engineering team, who devoted more than six years to solving complex problems,” Grignard continued. “Our team brought together expertise in microbiology, infectious diseases, aerosol and exposure science, chemistry, engineering, environmental health and regulatory science—designing studies, generating and analyzing an enormous body of data, and engineering systems capable of precisely controlling how Arresta is delivered into the air. Their scientific rigor, ingenuity and persistence made this registration possible, and I am enormously proud of what this team has accomplished.”

Mitch Simpler, Founding Member of Builds Bio+ and Chairman of the Board of Bleu Garde, said the announcement reflects a convergence between life sciences innovation and the environments in which that innovation ultimately has impact.

“For decades, those of us involved in designing and engineering life sciences and healthcare environments have focused on creating buildings that enable extraordinary science,” Simpler said. “Bleu Garde asks us to think about the built environment in another way: not simply as the place where science happens, but as an environment in which science and engineering can be applied directly to an important public health challenge. This is precisely the kind of cross-disciplinary innovation we should be bringing before the life sciences community.”

Years of Science Behind a New Approach to the Air We Share

Arresta is powered by Grignard Pure® Technology, Bleu Garde’s proprietary air treatment system. Arresta is dispersed into indoor air at ultra-low concentrations through purpose-designed dispensing technology, where it acts against airborne microorganisms in accordance with its EPA-registered label.

“From the outset, our standard was not simply to demonstrate that the technology could work—we needed the scientific evidence to establish how it works, how effectively it works and how it can be used responsibly in the real-world environments where people are actually present,” said Gurumurthy “Ram” Ramachandran, Ph.D., Chief Science Officer of Bleu Garde, and Professor and Co-Deputy Chair of the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. “That required years of rigorous efficacy testing, exposure science, independent validation and an unwavering commitment to following the evidence wherever it led.”

An “Air First” Approach to Restoration and Remediation

Bleu Garde is preparing to first introduce Arresta into the restoration and remediation market through its relationship with SERVPRO®, one of the largest property restoration networks in the United States.

The rollout is intended to make Arresta available through SERVPRO’s nationwide network of independently owned and operated franchise locations, providing participating restoration professionals with a new “Air First” capability in responding to water and mold events.

SERVPRO’s professional services network of more than 2,400 independently owned and operated franchises spans all 50 states. The planned rollout gives Bleu Garde an established channel through which the technology can be made available to SERVPRO’s network, allowing individual franchisees to utilize the technology in serving residential and commercial customers.

About Arresta®

Arresta® is Bleu Garde’s EPA-registered air treatment powered by the company’s proprietary Grignard Pure® Technology System. Arresta is registered for use as a virucidal air treatment, air sanitizer and fungistat and is designed for deployment in occupied indoor environments in accordance with its EPA-approved labeling.

Arresta is delivered through Bleu Garde’s purpose-designed dispersion technology to create controlled airborne concentrations of the active formulation. The platform is designed to complement—not replace—appropriate ventilation, filtration, cleaning, moisture control and other established infection-prevention and indoor environmental practices.
